A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. While the Nintendo Switch Online app boasts a strong GBA library, this list highlights those found independently on the eShop. Ten titles are featured: four GBA and six DS games, presented without ranking.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. Although the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge, this GBA iteration provides a worthwhile experience, offering a unique comparison point and a more streamlined gameplay. A fun title even for those not typically drawn to shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
While the Mega Man X console series faltered, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA as a worthy successor. The first entry lays the foundation for an excellent side-scrolling action series, albeit with some initial rough edges that are refined in later installments. A solid starting point for the series.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry, justified by its distinct gameplay from Mega Man Zero. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy within a clever virtual world concept. While later entries show diminishing returns, the original offers considerable enjoyment.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
From the Castlevania Advance Collection, Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it surpasses even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting system, though encouraging grinding, complements the engaging gameplay. A standout third-party GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
Originally a cult classic with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge gained wider recognition on DSiWare. Its success solidified Shantae's place in gaming, leading to continued appearances across generations. Interestingly, its GBA predecessor is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA title due to its origins, Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is particularly strong, though later installments are also highly regarded.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick offers a unique gameplay mechanic. As a ghost, players utilize their abilities to save others and unravel the mystery of their own death. A captivating and highly recommended title.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. While ports exist, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
From the Castlevania Dominus Collection, Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls compared to its original touch controls. However, all three DS Castlevania games in this collection are recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
While challenging to adapt outside the DS/3DS environment, this port is a worthwhile attempt. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, offers a substantial RPG experience.
