Amazon to shutter its app store on Android after more than ten years on mobile

by Eleanor Mar 21,2025

Amazon is shutting down its Android app store on August 20th, 2024. The service will continue to operate on Amazon Fire TV and Fire Tablets.

Launched in 2011, the Amazon Appstore for Android is closing its doors after over a decade. While this news is likely disappointing for developers and users, Amazon will maintain the Appstore on its own Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices.

According to Amazon's support page, Android apps installed from the store may not receive future updates or support. However, the Appstore will remain accessible on Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices.

Amazon Appstore Closure

Ironically, this closure comes as alternative app stores gain popularity. Amazon's Appstore never achieved widespread recognition, likely due to a lack of compelling features to attract users. Competitors like the Epic Games Store, with its free games program, offer significant advantages.

This situation highlights the unpredictable nature of even large companies; success isn't guaranteed, even with substantial resources.
