The latest addition to Ubisoft's renowned stealth-action open-world series, Assassin's Creed Shadows, has arrived, sparking discussions on where it stands among its predecessors. With over 30 games released under the Assassin's Creed banner, we're focusing solely on the mainline entries for this ranking. From the series' inception in 2007 with Desmond Miles and Altaïr, to the 16th-century Japan setting of Assassin's Creed Shadows featuring Naoe and Yasuke, the journey spans 18 years and 14 core games.
I've taken the liberty of ranking these mainline games based on personal enjoyment, using an IGN Tier List. Here's how I've categorized them:
Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag remains my top pick, cherished for its blend of island exploration, ship combat, and a vibrant cast of characters, making it the quintessential Assassin's Creed experience for me. It shares the S-tier with Assassin's Creed 2, which propelled the franchise into the spotlight. In the A-tier, Assassin's Creed Valhalla finds its place, perhaps surprisingly, due to my fondness for its Viking-themed combat and the engaging Orlog minigame. Joining it is Assassin's Creed Unity, whose detailed recreation of French Revolution-era Paris remains visually impressive even a decade later.
If you disagree with my rankings, perhaps thinking Valhalla is overly expansive or that Assassin's Creed 2 is overrated, I encourage you to create your own tier list. Rank the mainline Assassin's Creed games across S, A, B, C, and D tiers and compare your choices with the IGN community.
