Daredevil: Born Again's New Trailer Reveals a Surprising Alliance Against a Terrifying New Villain: Muse
A new trailer for Marvel's Daredevil: Born Again, premiering March 4th on Disney+, reveals a shocking twist: Daredevil and Kingpin, longtime adversaries, are seemingly collaborating. This unexpected partnership appears driven by a common enemy: the artistically-inclined serial killer, Muse.
Who is Muse?
Muse, a relatively recent addition to Daredevil's rogue's gallery, debuted in 2016's Daredevil #11. Created by Charles Soule and Ron Garney, and confirmed by Soule himself to be featured in the D23 footage, Muse is a chilling villain reminiscent of Hannibal. He views murder as a supreme art form, creating gruesome masterpieces from his victims. His methods involve using blood for murals and arranging corpses into elaborate displays.
Muse's unique threat to Daredevil stems from his ability to disrupt Matt Murdock's radar sense, acting as a sensory black hole. Combined with superhuman strength and speed, he poses a formidable challenge. His rivalry with Daredevil escalates after blinding Daredevil's sidekick, Blindspot. Even after being apprehended and self-mutilating to prevent further "artistic creations," Muse escapes and continues his killing spree. His obsession with vigilantes, culminating in a final confrontation with Blindspot, leads to his apparent suicide.
Muse's Return in Daredevil: Born Again
Despite his death in Daredevil #600, Muse's reappearance in the Daredevil: Born Again trailers, sporting a costume mirroring his comic book counterpart (a white mask and bodysuit with bloody tears), signifies the series' inspiration from modern Daredevil comics. While the series shares the title of the iconic 1986 storyline, it diverges significantly. Instead of focusing solely on Fisk's discovery of Daredevil's identity, the show highlights a new threat forcing an unlikely alliance between Murdock and Fisk.
The trailers depict a meeting between the two at a diner, hinting at a shared enemy powerful enough to necessitate their cooperation. This enemy is strongly suggested to be Muse. Fisk, now Mayor, is campaigning against vigilantism, while Muse glorifies vigilantes like the Punisher through his horrific art. This creates a mutual incentive for both Daredevil and Fisk to eliminate Muse: Daredevil seeks justice, while Fisk aims to maintain his authority.
The series also features other vigilantes like the Punisher and White Tiger, who are likely to become targets of Fisk's anti-vigilante crusade and subjects of Muse's twisted artistry.
Daredevil: Born Again appears poised to explore the enduring rivalry between Daredevil and Fisk while introducing a formidable new antagonist in Muse. His unique powers and brutal methods make him arguably Daredevil's most challenging opponent yet, forcing an uneasy alliance with his sworn enemy, Mayor Fisk.
