by Blake Apr 22,2025

The beasts that roam the Forbidden Lands in Monster Hunter Wilds are each as fearsome as the next. Uth Duna, a striking leviathan-type monster, is one you'll encounter early in the game. To help you reap its rewards, here's a comprehensive guide on how to beat and capture it.

How to Unlock Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds

You first encounter Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest during the mission questline of Chapter 1. After defeating other notable foes like Lala Barina and Congalala, you and Alma will need to meet up with Olivia and Erik, who are investigating a nearby dam. As the weather drastically changes, Uth Duna will reveal itself amidst a raging monsoon during Mission 1-5: Beyond the Deluge. Your next objective is to defeat the beast before it causes more havoc.

How to Beat and Capture Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds

Uth Duna's hunt moniker is ‘A Feast in the Deep’, appearing when the waters in the Scarlet Forest rise to dangerous levels. As the region's apex predator, battling it will be considerably more challenging than other monsters you've faced so far.

Before engaging Uth Duna, consider equipping a thunder-element weapon, ideally obtained from Rey Dau in Mission 2-2. If that's not an option, wear gear or a Talisman like Water Charm I to boost your water resistance. Make sure to eat a hearty meal to maintain high Health and Stamina, and bring Nulberries to counter the Waterblight status ailment that Uth Duna can inflict.

Uth Duna Attacks and Weaknesses

When fighting Uth Duna, pay attention to its iridescent fins on its legs and tail, which serve as a ‘Veil’ that temporarily boosts its defense at the cost of reduced mobility. Damaging the veil enough will make these fins retreat, exposing Uth Duna's weak points, including its Head (breakable), Mouth, Tail (breakable), and both Forelegs (breakable). However, without the veil, Uth Duna becomes more aggressive, so you'll need to stay nimble, especially while navigating through the water.

Key attacks to watch out for include:

  • Belly Slam: Uth Duna rises on its back legs and falls forward, slamming its belly.
  • Roar: Similar to other monsters, Uth Duna's roar can immobilize you temporarily.
  • Body Coil: It coils its body and spins before lashing out with its tail.
  • Aerial Twirl: Uth Duna leaps into the air in a twirling motion and slams back down, affecting a wide area.
  • Leg Swipe: Close encounters may trigger Uth Duna to swipe at you with its clawed feet.

Remember, after killing a monster once, you can check its weaknesses in your Field Guide.

Should You Capture or Kill Uth Duna?

As with previous Monster Hunter games, you can choose to capture or kill Uth Duna near the end of the battle. To capture it, weaken the monster until it's "tired" or "exhausted" (nearly dead), then use a Shock Trap or Pitfall Trap. Once trapped, use at least one Tranq Bomb to knock it out and complete the capture.

Both capturing and killing Uth Duna are viable, with the main difference being the item rewards you can obtain. While the exact differences in items are yet to be confirmed, here are the potential low-rank and high-rank drops:
