Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?

Fighting Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a daunting challenge. In my experience, it took over an hour to conquer this formidable foe. However, there are compelling reasons to take him on. Firstly, defeating Lu Bu earns you bragging rights – a true badge of honor. Secondly, depending on your allegiance to Shu or Wei, you might be forced to face him in Chapter 4 during the Battle of Xiapi. Lastly, triumphing over him at the Battle of Hulao Gate not only grants you the "The Strongest" trophy but also unlocks the game's ultimate weapon, the halberd, in the post-game, providing strong incentives to challenge him.

Lu Bu’s First Phase

Before engaging Lu Bu, ensure you're equipped with the right gear. A weapon like a sword that can deliver multiple hits and stagger him is essential, along with Battle Arts that are quick to activate, require minimal Bravery, and have a wide range. In my battle, I used Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Accessories that boost your health and defense, such as Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell, are crucial as Lu Bu's attacks can quickly deplete your health. Additionally, choose a weapon with a skill that grants Bravery for each Perfect Evade, as this will be key to gaining Bravery during the fight.

In most encounters, Lu Bu starts the battle mounted on his horse, Red Hare. This initial phase is relatively straightforward; Lu Bu charges around the area on Red Hare. He's fast, but he pauses occasionally to rest. Use these moments to hit him with your Battle Arts, then retreat. His attacks have limited AOE, except when Red Hare leaps and crashes down, making them manageable to dodge. Once his health drops to 80%, he dismounts, and the real battle begins.

Lu Bu’s Second Phase

Lu Bu grabbing the Wanderer in Dynasty Warriors: OriginsOn foot, Lu Bu becomes even more formidable. His attacks are swift, and he moves rapidly across the battlefield, often surrounded by a red aura that makes him immune to staggering or interruption. When he charges, he does so in sets of three; evade these and prepare for the next. If he charges without his spear, he's attempting a grab that can severely damage your health, but it's easily evaded like his other charges.

His most dangerous move is when he glows orange, signaling an imminent attack where he launches three massive arrows at you three times, capable of juggling and decimating your health. To counter this, use a Battle Art like Absconding Slash from a distance; close-range arts like Palm Strike will lead to your demise. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergencies, as it grants invincibility for a few crucial seconds.

Lu Bu is surprisingly vulnerable to juggling during this phase. Hitting him with consecutive attacks will quickly charge your Battle Arts and deplete his Fortitude meter. Stay close to react better to his moves, and remember: evade, evade, evade.

Lu Bu’s Final Phase

When Lu Bu's health is sufficiently low, he enters Musou Rage, marking the final phase. Now unstaggered, he unleashes a relentless barrage of attacks. Your goal is to deplete his Fortitude before he executes his Musou attack. Use all your remaining resources – Musou attacks, Battle Arts, and rapid strikes. If he completes his Musou Attack, he'll immediately reactivate it, forcing you to restart the phase. Breaking his Fortitude here is your key to victory, allowing you to finally defeat this legendary adversary.

And that’s how to defeat Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins! The game is now available for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
