If you were eagerly anticipating a new Diablo 4 expansion in 2025, you'll need to hold on a bit longer. Diablo general manager Rod Fergusson announced at the DICE Summit in Las Vegas that the next major expansion for Diablo 4 won't arrive until 2026.
During his talk, Fergusson emphasized the team's commitment to enhancing its relationship with the community. He revealed plans to adopt a strategy similar to that of Diablo Immortal and World of Warcraft by releasing content roadmaps. Fans can look forward to a roadmap for Diablo 4's 2025 plans, which will outline the seasons and updates expected throughout the year. However, Fergusson clarified that the upcoming expansion will not be included on this roadmap, as it is scheduled for release in 2026.
"In 2025, or just before Season 8, we will have a 2025 roadmap for Diablo 4. Now, our second expansion won't be on that roadmap, because our second expansion is coming in 2026, but at least players will have the road ahead."
While Fergusson did not delve deeply into the reasons for the delay, he provided some insight earlier in his presentation. Initially, Blizzard had planned to release annual expansions, starting with Vessel of Hatred in 2024, followed by another in 2025. However, Vessel of Hatred was released 18 months after the game's initial launch, rather than the intended 12 months. This delay was due to the team's focus on responding to player feedback and making necessary adjustments to live content, which temporarily shifted resources away from the expansion, pushing back all subsequent planned content.
Diablo 4 recently launched its Season of Witchcraft, introducing new witchcraft powers, a fresh questline, and more. Our review of the base game awarded it a 9/10, praising it as "a stunning sequel with near perfect endgame and progression design that makes it absolutely excruciating to put down."
