Following significant player backlash, Fortnite has reinstated the unlockable Matte Black style for the Master Chief skin. Epic Games reversed its initial decision to remove the style, ensuring players can still obtain it.
The return of the Master Chief skin, initially released in 2020, was highly anticipated by the Fortnite community. While the December Winterfest event has been largely well-received, the initial announcement regarding the Matte Black style caused considerable controversy. The style's removal, announced on December 23rd, contradicted earlier statements that it would remain permanently unlockable for Xbox Series X/S players who owned the skin. Epic Games subsequently corrected this, confirming the Matte Black style's continued availability.
This reversal follows community concerns that the change constituted a deceptive practice, potentially attracting the attention of the FTC (Federal Trade Commission). This concern stemmed from the FTC's recent $72 million refund to Fortnite players due to "dark patterns" used by Epic Games. The dissatisfaction extended to both new and existing Master Chief skin owners, as the change affected everyone.
The Master Chief skin's return isn't the only recent point of contention. The reintroduction of the Renegade Raider skin also sparked controversy, with some veteran players threatening to abandon the game. Currently, some players are advocating for an "OG" style for original Master Chief skin purchasers, a request Epic Games seems unlikely to fulfill, despite resolving the Matte Black style issue.
