GameCube Fans Excited by New Nintendo Filings for Switch 2

by Owen Apr 03,2025

Nintendo fans are buzzing with excitement over new filings that hint at the possibility of a GameCube controller being used for playing classic GameCube games on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 through the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service. As reported by Nintendo Life, an FCC filing for a "game controller" aligns with the Switch 2, suggesting it could be a wireless Bluetooth controller.

Internet sleuths, particularly those on Famiboards, have analyzed images from the filing and believe the label location matches the back of a GameCube controller, specifically behind the C-Stick. While it's possible this could be a Switch 2 Pro Controller, the current speculation leans toward its integration with Nintendo's Switch Online service, which already supports wireless classic controllers for retro gaming.

This development has sparked discussions about the potential addition of a GameCube library to Nintendo Switch Online. Fans have long awaited the inclusion of GameCube classics on the Switch, but Nintendo has primarily focused on re-releasing titles from the NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy on its subscription service. Could the Switch 2 finally bring the GameCube catalog back in a significant way?

The Switch 2 was unveiled earlier in January with a brief trailer that confirmed features like backwards compatibility and an additional USB-C port. However, many details, such as other games and the function of a mysterious new Joy-Con button, remain undisclosed. Speculation about the Joy-Con mouse theory has been circulating, and a recent Nintendo patent suggested that Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers might be attachable upside down. This innovation, utilizing magnets instead of rails, could allow players to customize button placement and headphone port location, potentially leading to new gameplay mechanics.

Analysts predict the Switch 2 might be priced at $400, with some suggesting a potential increase to $500. June is rumored to be the release month, though much remains unknown about the console. Nintendo has scheduled a Direct for April 2, where more details are expected to be revealed.

In the meantime, fans can enjoy a taste of GameCube nostalgia with Metroid Prime Remastered, available on the current Nintendo Switch.
