Monster Hunter Wilds Developers Weigh In on a Potential 15th Weapon Type
A New Weapon Type Remains a Possibility
After over a decade with the same weapon roster, the Monster Hunter (MH) series might finally see a new addition. In a February 16, 2025 interview with PCGamesN, Monster Hunter Wilds Director Yuya Tokuda discussed the possibility of introducing a new weapon type.
Monster Hunter Wilds offers 14 weapon types, a selection unchanged since Monster Hunter 4 and the introduction of the Insect Glaive over a decade ago. While Tokuda expressed interest in creating a new weapon, he explained the challenges involved in finding a design that doesn't overlap significantly with existing weapons. He emphasized the significant time and resources dedicated to refining existing weapons for each title, prioritizing comprehensive improvements over simply adding a new one.
Capcom's Approach to Weapon Refinement in Monster Hunter Wilds
Capcom continues to innovate, refining weapons for MH Wilds with features like Focus Mode and Power Clash. While incorporating community feedback from the MH Wilds beta, Tokuda stressed the importance of maintaining the core feel of each weapon.
He highlighted the careful balancing process for each title, aiming for a specific "feel" for each weapon type. He acknowledged that player experience ultimately determines if the intended feel is achieved. Balancing the weapons in Wilds proved particularly challenging due to the extensive additions made in Iceborne, which added many high-level moves and abilities. This presented a challenge for Wilds, which aimed for a fresh start, overhauling weapon mechanics to fit the game's overall design.
