PGA Tour 2K25: Last Look Before Launch

by Samuel Apr 21,2025

If you were to conduct a Family Feud-style survey on which pro sports simulation video game series fans would most want 2K to tackle that they're not currently making, a revival of NFL 2K would undoubtedly top the list. Even pro golf might not rank as the second or third choice (consider MLB and NHL). Nonetheless, 2K is stepping up to the tee once again with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a couple of hours of gameplay, there's much to appreciate.

Developer HB Studios has been refining its golf game for quite some time, starting with The Golf Club a decade ago before transitioning to PGA Tour 2K in 2020 under the 2K banner. Their expertise and polish are evident in 2K25, as I found it challenging to pinpoint any major flaws during my hands-on session. While it may not be the most visually stunning sports game, and it would be great to have more real-life courses (though 2K25 does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and the Open Championship), there were some surprising frame rate issues on PC when surveying new holes. Yet, diving into this year's game was simply enjoyable.

The game introduces the upgraded EvoSwing mechanic, offering various control options. Using a controller, I found the right stick method most intuitive, where you pull down to wind up and press forward to strike and follow through. This can be adjusted for different difficulty levels; higher settings demand precision, where a slight thumb movement could result in a slice or hook, while lower settings (Perfect Swing) offer a more forgiving experience for casual players. Additionally, you can use LB to shape your shots, adding more control over the ball's trajectory. HB Studios has also enhanced the ball physics, and the ability to adjust your position laterally in the tee box is a welcome addition, especially when starting as Tiger Woods, this year's cover athlete.

MyCareer mode has seen significant enhancements, incorporating narrative elements familiar from other sports titles. I was offered a role in a movie alongside Christopher "Shooter McGavin" McDonald, who appears in the game but not as his iconic Happy Gilmore character due to licensing issues. The choice between playing a hero or villain affects which MyCareer stats are boosted. Gear obtained through earned VC also impacts your stats, and skills can be upgraded by playing and winning. The introduction of Quests, which can be refreshed weekly, adds an engaging layer to the gameplay, such as achieving 10 consecutive birdies.

In MyPlayer mode, while I didn't spend much time perfecting my avatar, the player creator allowed me to get reasonably close to my likeness. The addition of skill trees is a notable upgrade. Unfortunately, I couldn't test the multiplayer features, which promise casual fun with ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, reminiscent of my enjoyable times playing Links 2004 on the original Xbox. The game also offers asynchronous multiplayer options, ideal for friends in different time zones.

Previewing PGA Tour 2K25 is challenging because it performs well across the board without any significant drawbacks. This makes it hard to get overly excited, but it's a solid choice for golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxed gaming experience. You can try it out for yourself at no cost, as a playable demo of PGA Tour 2K25 is available starting today.
