Rockstar's latest update to Grand Theft Auto 5, known as GTA 5 Enhanced, has not been well-received by the Steam community since its release on March 4. The game currently holds a 'mixed' user review rating, with only 54% of the 19,772 reviews being positive. This is a stark contrast to the original GTA 5 on Steam, which, despite being unlisted and no longer searchable, boasts a 'very positive' rating.
GTA 5 Enhanced is the lowest-rated GTA title on Steam, even falling below Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition, which has a 66% positive review rating. This new version offers a free upgrade for PC players, bringing features previously exclusive to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S versions of GTA Online. These include access to Hao’s Special Works for the latest vehicles and performance upgrades, animal encounters, and the ability to purchase a GTA+ Membership, along with enhanced graphics and quicker loading times. All existing PC players can upgrade for free and transfer their Story Mode and Online progress.

However, the process of migrating accounts has been fraught with issues, which is a major point of contention among players. Many negative reviews highlight problems with account migration, with one player stating, "‘The GTA Online profile associated with this Rockstar Games account is not eligible for migration at this time,’" and expressing frustration over the potential loss of nearly 700 hours of gameplay. Another review criticized the upgrade as an "objective downgrade" from the original version, while others lamented the lack of support from Rockstar in resolving migration issues.
Despite these challenges, GTA 5 Enhanced continues to attract a significant number of players on Steam, reaching a peak concurrent player count of 187,059 since its launch. However, the rocky reception has raised concerns among PC gamers about the future release of Grand Theft Auto 6 on PC, especially given that GTA 6 is set to launch in the fall of 2025 exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. A former Rockstar developer has urged PC gamers to remain patient and give the studio the benefit of the doubt regarding the delayed PC release.
