ESRB Ratings Hint at Imminent Doom 64 Release on Next-Gen Consoles
Updated ESRB ratings suggest a new port of the classic first-person shooter, Doom 64, is on its way to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. While neither Bethesda nor id Software have made an official announcement, the updated ratings strongly indicate an impending release.
The 1997 Nintendo 64 exclusive, Doom 64, received a remastered release for PS4 and Xbox One in 2020, boasting enhanced visuals and a new level. Now, it seems this enhanced version is destined for current-gen consoles. The ESRB's updated listing includes PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, a strong indicator of an imminent launch, as developers typically submit ratings close to release to ensure accuracy. This isn't unprecedented; the ESRB previously revealed the re-release of Felix the Cat before its official announcement.
While the updated rating doesn't mention a PC port, the 2020 version included a Steam release. Furthermore, dedicated fans can already experience a Doom 64-like experience on PC through modding existing Doom titles. Given Bethesda's history of surprise releases for older Doom titles, a similar quiet launch for Doom 64 remains a possibility.
Looking beyond Doom 64, 2025 promises another exciting entry in the franchise: Doom: The Dark Ages. With rumors suggesting a January reveal, the release is highly anticipated. These re-releases of classic Doom titles could serve as excellent preparation for the next chapter in this legendary series.
