Riot Games' 2XKO (formerly Project L) is poised to revolutionize tag-team fighting games. This article delves into its innovative tag-team mechanics and the recently available playable demo.
2XKO's Innovative Tag-Team Approach
Duo Play: A Four-Player Experience
Demonstrated at EVO 2024 (July 19-21), 2XKO introduces "Duo Play," a unique twist on the 2v2 format. Instead of one player controlling both characters, two players team up, each controlling a champion. This results in thrilling four-player matches, with two teams of two. Each team designates one player as the "Point" and the other as the "Assist." The demo even showcased 2v1 matches, where one player controls two champions against two individual players.
The Assist, though not directly controlling the Point character, plays a crucial role through three key mechanics:
- Assist Actions: The Point can summon the Assist for special moves.
- Handshake Tag: The Point and Assist instantly swap roles.
- Dynamic Save: The Assist can interrupt enemy combos.
Matches are longer than in traditional tag fighters. Unlike games where a single knockout ends the match, 2XKO requires both players on a team to be defeated. However, defeated champions remain active as Assists, providing strategic support.
Beyond character selection, 2XKO introduces "Fuses"—synergy options that dramatically alter team playstyles. The demo featured five Fuses:
- PULSE: Rapid attacks for powerful combos.
- FURY: Increased damage and dash cancel below 40% health.
- FREESTYLE: Perform two Handshake Tags consecutively.
- DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate abilities with your partner.
- 2X ASSIST: The Assist can perform multiple actions.
Game designer Daniel Maniago highlighted the Fuse system's ability to enhance player expression and facilitate devastating combos, particularly for well-coordinated duos.
Champion Roster and Alpha Lab Playtest
The playable demo featured six champions: Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi, each reflecting their League of Legends counterparts. While Jinx and Katarina were absent from this Alpha Lab Playtest (August 8-19), their inclusion is confirmed for the future.
