The Series' Revival: A Push from "Company N"
LEVEL-5, the creative force behind the Professor Layton series, initially believed the series concluded perfectly with Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy. However, at Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2024, LEVEL-5 CEO Akihiro Hino revealed that influential figures at "Company ‘N’" (widely understood to be Nintendo) strongly encouraged a return to the steampunk world.
Hino stated that the push from Nintendo was significant, given the nearly 10-year gap since the last title. Nintendo's involvement is unsurprising considering their close ties to the franchise, which flourished on the Nintendo DS and 3DS. Nintendo published numerous Layton titles and recognizes the series as a flagship DS exclusive.
Hino explained that the positive feedback prompted a decision to create a new game that would meet the high standards of modern consoles.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam: A Glimpse into the Adventure
Set a year after Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, the new game reunites Professor Layton and his apprentice, Luke Triton, in Steam Bison, a vibrant American city powered by steam technology. Their investigation centers around a puzzling mystery involving Gunman King Joe, a legendary gunslinger lost to time.
The game maintains the series' hallmark brain-bending puzzles, this time enhanced by QuizKnock, renowned for their innovative puzzle designs. This collaboration is highly anticipated by fans, particularly following the mixed reception of Layton's Mystery Journey, which featured Layton's daughter.
