Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a Baldur's Gate 4 sequel.
A Playable BG4 Prototype Exists
Larian CEO Swen Vincke, in a PC Gamer interview, confirmed a playable prototype for a BG3 follow-up existed. While acknowledging it was a project fans would have enjoyed, the team ultimately decided against further development. The reasons cited were the extensive time commitment required for a project of that scale (potentially three more years) and a desire to pursue original ideas. The team felt they needed to move on from the Dungeons & Dragons IP after years of development.
High Morale Following the Decision
The decision to abandon BG4 and a planned BG3 expansion was met with positive reception within Larian. Vincke described a significant boost in team morale, attributing it to the freedom of pursuing new projects. The studio is now focused on two undisclosed projects, which Vincke promises will be their most ambitious yet.
Future Projects: Beyond Baldur's Gate
With Larian moving away from the Baldur's Gate franchise for now, speculation points towards a new entry in their Divinity series. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 has been hinted at previously, Vincke clarified that their next Divinity project will be unexpected.
Baldur's Gate 3's Future
Meanwhile, Baldur's Gate 3 will receive one final major patch in Fall 2024, introducing mod support, cross-play functionality, and new evil endings.
