The DCU's The Authority film faces setbacks, according to DC Studios co-chief James Gunn, who revealed the project has been placed "on the back burner."
Initially announced two years ago as a key component of Gunn and Peter Safran's Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters DC Universe reboot, The Authority, featuring the notoriously brutal WildStorm Universe superhero team, was described as a "big movie." However, unforeseen challenges have emerged.
Gunn, speaking at a DC Studios presentation, cited the project's complexity and the impact of Amazon's successful The Boys as contributing factors to the delay. He explained that adapting The Authority in a landscape already shaped by its influence proved difficult, particularly given the ongoing development of other DCU projects and the desire to maintain continuity between existing characters and storylines. Consequently, the film is currently a lower priority.

It's worth noting that The Engineer/Angela Spica, a powerful member of The Authority, is slated to appear in the upcoming Superman: Legacy. For a deeper dive into The Authority's characters, see IGN's article, "Who Are the Authority: The WildStorm DCU Characters Explained."
Other Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters projects have also encountered difficulties. Gunn mentioned that Waller, a spin-off of Peacemaker, has experienced setbacks. However, Booster Gold is progressing well, and Paradise Lost remains a high priority, with the pilot script currently under development.
Regarding Swamp Thing, DC Studios is prepared to wait for director James Mangold's availability. Mangold's commitment to other projects, including a Star Wars film, has necessitated a postponement. However, Gunn clarified that Swamp Thing isn't crucial to the overarching narrative.
