It wouldn't be a Nintendo console without a Zelda game, and the Nintendo Switch 2 is no exception, though it brings us a surprise. During today's Nintendo Direct, we learned that Koei Tecmo is developing a new addition to the Hyrule Warriors series: a prequel to Tears of the Kingdom titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. Fans can look forward to its release this winter.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment dives into the lore of Tears of the Kingdom by focusing on the characters from its ancient history. You'll see familiar faces like Zelda, alongside Rauru, Sonia, and other Secret Stone holders. The game unfolds the narrative of Zelda's time-traveling adventure where she allies with the last Zonai, Rauru, his sister Mineru, and his wife Sonia, to battle Ganondorf and his forces.Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 - Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment

The trailer showcased the unique abilities of these champions, including Mineru piloting her mech, Zelda harnessing her magic, Rauru wielding a fascinating sword-spear, and brief appearances of other Sacred Stone wielders.
This marks the third installment in the Hyrule Warriors series, following the original Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which served as a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Age of Calamity was notable for its unexpected twists on the Breath of the Wild storyline, making it exciting to see how Age of Imprisonment might diverge from the established narrative. We previously rated Age of Calamity a 9/10, praising it as "a joy to play and discover" and "a blast from start to finish."
