Larian Studios Shifts Focus to New Game, Enforces Media Blackout

by Hannah Apr 15,2025

Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, has announced a significant shift in focus towards their next project. The studio has declared a "media blackout" for the foreseeable future, signaling their full commitment to crafting a new game. While fans eagerly await Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, expected to launch this year, Larian's attention is now firmly set on what's next.

Swen Vincke, the head of Larian, recently took to Twitter to reminisce about the studio’s journey, which has been marked by the overwhelming success of Baldur’s Gate 3. In his tweet, Vincke hinted at more to come, saying, "But the story ain't over yet." In a subsequent statement to VideoGamer, Larian emphasized that Vincke and the team's full attention is now on their upcoming title, marking a clear departure from the Baldur’s Gate series and the Dungeons & Dragons universe.

The new project is shrouded in mystery, with Larian confirming it will not be a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 or any D&D game. Instead, it's a fresh start, a decision influenced by the studio's inability to generate internal enthusiasm for another Baldur’s Gate title. In November 2023, Vincke hinted at the studio’s next big game, expressing excitement about pushing boundaries in response to Baldur’s Gate 3's numerous Game Awards nominations.

While a sequel to Larian's Divinity: Original Sin series is also on the horizon, Vincke cautioned fans not to expect it immediately. Speaking to IGN in July 2023, he mentioned a return to the Divinity universe but emphasized the need for a creative break after completing Baldur’s Gate 3. "It's our own universe we built, so we're definitely gonna get back there at some point," Vincke said, highlighting the dedication of the 400 developers who poured their hearts and souls into Baldur’s Gate 3.

As for what Larian’s next game might be, speculation is rife. Given their history with fantasy RPGs, could they explore new genres like science fiction or modern-day settings? The possibilities are endless, but with the media blackout in place, it may be years before we uncover the details of Larian's next ambitious project.
