The Samsung 990 Evo Plus is an excellent choice for both gaming PCs and PlayStation 5 consoles. It surpasses Sony's minimum speed requirements for the PS5 with sequential read speeds of up to 7,250MB/s and write speeds of up to 6,300MB/s. While it's faster than the non-Pro 990 Evo, it falls slightly short of the 990 Pro's speeds. The key difference is that the 990 Evo Plus is a DRAM-less drive, but it compensates with HMB (host memory buffer) technology, using a negligible amount of your system's RAM. This means gamers won't notice any performance differences between the Evo Plus and the Pro.
The Samsung 990 Evo Plus does not come with a pre-installed heatsink. However, its new single-sided design is power-efficient and generates less heat than older SSDs. This makes it suitable for use in a PS5 without thermal throttling. While adding a heatsink for peace of mind is an option, it's an additional $7 that isn't strictly necessary.
