Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice

Emerging circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could offer a novel functionality: acting as computer mice. While the widespread adoption of this mode by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller experimentation.

The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously accessed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.

In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests referencing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." This terminology, typically used for computer mouse bottoms, hints at potential mouse-like functionality for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These designations aren't found in public component databases, suggesting they're unreleased products. The reported 90 x 90mm size suggests the tape could cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly. The legitimacy of this information, however, remains unconfirmed.

Not a First for Handheld Consoles

While unconventional, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, allows its right controller to function as a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic housing to facilitate this mode.

The Legion GO also features magnetic rails for attaching controllers—a feature rumored for the Switch 2. These similarities offer a potential preview of Nintendo's next hybrid console.
