Magic: The Gathering - 5 New Cards from Tarkir: Dragonstorm

These five cards form what is known as a "cycle," unified by common design elements across each of Magic's colors. They are all affordable, common-rarity creatures with an ability linked to one of Tarkir's three-color clans, and another feature that enables you to convert mana into a color from that clan.
“Three-color limited environments demand robust mana fixing across all rarities,” explains Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak. “Our aim was to make mana fixing accessible to a wide range of decks. Thus, we crafted numerous designs to address mana issues. These creatures are particularly useful as they allow you to develop your board while simultaneously enhancing your mana - unlike tapped lands, which only generate mana and can put you at a disadvantage.”

In this case, they illustrate how the clans have evolved since players last encountered them. “The fervent, action-driven Jeskai monks, the Temur using Whisper magic, the Sultai Nagas as guardians (and avengers) of the jungle, the Mardu showcasing military might with diverse roles (and demonstrating that dragons come in various forms), and the Abzan clerics reviving the lost kin trees.”
Some fans have critiqued recent Magic sets for leaning too heavily on tropes or thematic gimmicks, even when revisiting established planes. This makes Tarkir: Dragonstorm's straightforward approach to returning to Tarkir particularly noteworthy. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges the importance of such feedback to Wizards of the Coast, but points out that “the core concept for Tarkir was set long before the release of Murders at Karlov Manor and subsequent sets, and it remained unchanged.”“We aimed to merge Dragons and Clans in a novel way for Tarkir, with Dragonstorms playing a pivotal role in our design strategy. From the beginning, Lauren and I felt the pressure to authentically and substantively expand on this cherished plane's narrative.”
Tarkir: Dragonstorm is available for preorder now, with the set set to launch in both physical and digital formats on April 11, and in-store prerelease events starting on April 4. Dive into the full interview with Wizards of the Coast’s Adam Prosak, Lauren Bond, and Forrest Schehl to learn more.
