Assassin’s Creed Shadows Immersive Mode, explained

by Jonathan Mar 22,2025

The Assassin's Creed franchise has always strived to immerse players in diverse historical cultures. With Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft takes a significant leap forward, transporting players to 16th-century Japan. Let's explore the game's Immersive Mode.

What Does Immersive Mode Do in Assassin's Creed Shadows?

In most Assassin's Creed games, dialogue is modernized, deviating from the characters' native tongues. While Assassin's Creed Shadows largely follows this pattern, Immersive Mode introduces a crucial change.

Immersive Mode enhances authenticity by locking character dialogue to their historically accurate languages. This means the primary voiceover language becomes Japanese. However, it cleverly incorporates Portuguese dialogue where appropriate, reflecting the presence of Jesuits and Yasuke's interactions with them.

This feature significantly boosts the game's immersive quality and historical accuracy. While players could somewhat emulate this in previous games (like using the Arabic dub in Mirage), Immersive Mode represents a substantial advancement for the Assassin's Creed series.

Should You Turn On Immersive Mode in Assassin's Creed Shadows?

The main drawback of Immersive Mode is missing the performances of the English voice cast. However, the Japanese and Portuguese voice actors deliver equally compelling performances.

Extensive subtitle options are available, allowing you to follow the dialogue in your preferred language. Immersive Mode can be toggled on or off in the audio settings at any time; a simple reload of your last save applies the change. Unlike the game's Canon Mode, you aren't locked into this choice for the entire playthrough. Experimenting with Immersive Mode carries no risk.

For the most authentic Assassin's Creed Shadows experience, Immersive Mode is highly recommended. It truly transports you back in time, and we hope to see this feature in future installments.

Assassin's Creed Shadows is available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
