Deadlock's Major Overhaul: From Four Lanes to Three
Deadlock, the unique third-person MOBA, has unveiled its most significant update in months: a dramatic shift from a four-lane to a three-lane map. This comprehensive rework, detailed in a February 26, 2025 Steam post, promises significant gameplay changes.
The core alteration involves simplifying the map structure. The four-lane system, arguably complex for a third-person MOBA, is being streamlined to the more conventional three lanes. This change is accompanied by a wide array of adjustments impacting visuals, building layouts, pathways, neutral camps, air vents, destructible objects, power-up buffs, strategic maneuvering locations, the mid-boss encounter, and more.
Further enhancements include simplified farming mechanics. Players no longer need to execute precise last hits on enemy units to generate Soul Orbs, easing early-game resource acquisition. The update also incorporates improvements to the game's netcode and client performance.
A Necessary Revitalization?
This substantial update is anticipated to reinvigorate Deadlock's player base. After reaching an all-time high of 171,490 concurrent players in September 2024, the game experienced a steep 90% decline in active players. This update aims to address this downturn.
Valve developer Yoshi explained the shift in update frequency on Deadlock's Discord server in January 2025. The previous bi-weekly update cycle proved too restrictive for implementing substantial changes. Future major patches will be larger but less frequent, with hotfixes deployed as needed.
