Gundam Breaker 4: A Deep Dive Review Across Platforms, Including Steam Deck Performance

Back in 2016, the Gundam Breaker series was a niche import title for PS Vita enthusiasts. The announcement of a global, multi-platform release for Gundam Breaker 4 in 2024 was a huge surprise, and after 60 hours across various platforms, I can confirm it's largely a success, though with a few caveats.

This release is significant for its accessibility. No more importing Asia English releases! Gundam Breaker 4 boasts dual audio (English and Japanese) and multiple subtitle options (EFIGS and more). But how does the game itself fare across different platforms?

The story, while serviceable, is not the main draw. Early dialogue can feel protracted, but the latter half delivers more compelling character reveals and interactions. Newcomers will be brought up to speed, though the significance of certain characters might be lost without prior series experience.

The true heart of Gundam Breaker 4 lies in its unparalleled customization. You can meticulously adjust individual parts, weapons (including dual-wielding), and even the scale of components, allowing for truly unique Gunpla creations. Builder parts add even more layers of customization, offering additional skills and aesthetic options. EX and OP skills, along with ability cartridges, further enhance combat strategy.

Progression involves completing missions, earning parts, and upgrading them using acquired materials. The game's difficulty is well-balanced; grinding isn't necessary on standard difficulty, though higher difficulties unlock later, increasing the challenge. Optional quests offer additional rewards and fun game modes, such as survival mode.

Beyond customization, you can adjust paint, decals, and weathering effects, offering endless possibilities for personalization. The gameplay itself is highly enjoyable, with varied combat that remains engaging even on easier difficulties. Boss fights involve targeting weak points and utilizing different weapon types. The only significant issue was a single boss fight with challenging AI.

Visually, Gundam Breaker 4 is a mixed bag. Environments are initially underwhelming, but the Gunpla models and animations are exceptionally well-done. The art style is distinct and scales well on lower-end hardware. The music is mostly forgettable, lacking memorable tracks from the anime series. Voice acting, however, is surprisingly good in both English and Japanese.

Minor bugs were encountered, including some Steam Deck-specific issues. Online multiplayer functionality was not fully tested on PC due to pre-launch server limitations.

The game's replayability hinges on the desire to build the perfect Gunpla and tackle higher difficulties. Repetitive elements might deter players who dislike grinding.

Platform Differences:

  • PC: Supports over 60fps, mouse and keyboard, and multiple controller options. Runs exceptionally well on Steam Deck.
  • PS5: Capped at 60fps, boasts excellent visuals and haptic feedback.
  • Switch: Runs around 30fps, with compromises in resolution and detail. Assembly and diorama modes are sluggish.

DLC: The Ultimate Edition offers additional parts and diorama content, but the early unlocks aren't game-changing.

Overall: Gundam Breaker 4 is a fantastic entry in the series, excelling in customization and gameplay. While the story is decent, the focus is clearly on building and battling. The Steam Deck version is highly recommended, while the PS5 version offers superior visuals. The Switch version is playable but suffers from performance issues.
