Marvel vs Capcom Icons May Resurface in Upcoming Games

Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto hinted at a potential return of beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in future Capcom fighting games. This exciting possibility was discussed following his appearance at EVO 2024, where he promoted the upcoming "Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics."

Matsumoto stated that the return of Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon – the original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 – is "always a possibility." The release of the arcade classics collection, he believes, will reintroduce these characters to a wider audience, potentially sparking renewed interest and paving the way for their inclusion in titles like Street Fighter 6. He emphasized that fan enthusiasm would be key to making this happen, highlighting the opportunity to expand the creative pool for future Capcom projects.

The upcoming "Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection" itself represents years of effort and collaboration with Marvel. Matsumoto explained that previous attempts to release this collection were hampered by timing and logistical challenges. However, this release serves as a stepping stone towards a larger goal: creating a brand-new Versus series title and re-releasing other classic Capcom fighting games on modern platforms with updated features like rollback netcode.

Matsumoto clarified that Capcom's plans extend beyond the Versus series, encompassing other legacy fighting games. While acknowledging the complexities and time constraints involved in re-releasing these titles, including collaborations with external parties, he stressed the importance of re-introducing these classics to energize the community and gauge fan interest for future projects. The success of the "Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection" will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping Capcom's future plans for its fighting game catalog.
