Following the reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2, the partnership between Nintendo and Xbox is set to continue seamlessly. Microsoft's head of gaming, Phil Spencer, recently reaffirmed his commitment to the Switch platform, emphasizing its role in reaching audiences beyond Xbox and PC users.
In an interview with Variety, when asked about specific projects for the Nintendo Switch 2, Spencer expressed Xbox's ongoing support for Nintendo's consoles. "Nintendo has been a great partner. We think it is a unique way for us to reach players who aren’t PC players, who aren’t players on Xbox," he stated. He highlighted the importance of expanding their community and investing in their game franchises through this partnership.
Spencer further emphasized his belief in Nintendo's significance to the gaming industry, stating, "I’m really a big believer in what Nintendo means for this industry and us continuing to support them. And getting the support from them for our franchises, I think, is an important part of our future."Spencer has consistently praised the Nintendo Switch 2, particularly commending Nintendo's innovative approach during the console's initial teaser phase. He also confirmed Xbox's strategy to expand its game availability across multiple platforms, including PlayStation, Steam, and Nintendo consoles.
When questioned by Variety about whether the Switch 2's reveal made him eager to announce Xbox's next console developments, Spencer remained focused on community and player engagement. "No. I think all of us in this industry should focus on our communities and the player base that we’re building," he said. He expressed inspiration from various creators and platform holders but maintained confidence in Xbox's current plans.
Spencer reiterated Xbox's commitment to making their games accessible "in as many places as possible," spanning cloud, PC, and consoles. Titles like Pentiment and Obsidian's Grounded have already been released on Nintendo platforms, and it will be exciting to see what Xbox brings to the Switch 2 upon its official launch.
