Analyst Projections for PS5 Pro Sales Despite Price Increase
PS5 Pro's Enhanced Capabilities Fuel Handheld Console Speculation
The $700 PS5 Pro's launch is anticipated to generate sales comparable to the PS4 Pro, according to Ampere Analysis, despite the significant price difference. Ampere's Piers Harding-Rolls notes a much larger price gap between the standard PS5 and the PS5 Pro (40-50%) compared to the PS4 and PS4 Pro at launch.
The firm forecasts approximately 1.3 million PS5 Pro units sold during the November 2024 launch window, considerably less than the PS4 Pro's initial sales. Harding-Rolls highlights the price disparity, suggesting it might dampen demand, but believes PlayStation enthusiasts will be less price-sensitive. The PS4 Pro ultimately sold around 14.5 million units, representing about 12% of total PS4 sales, with projected sales reaching approximately 13 million units over five years. Sell-through, as defined, represents direct consumer purchases from retailers.
Furthermore, PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny confirmed that the PS5 Pro will enhance PSVR2 gaming through performance improvements. He stated to CNET that the upgraded GPU will allow for higher resolution PSVR2 game outputs, although specific titles haven't been announced. Cerny also mentioned that PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, the PS5 Pro's AI upscaling technology, will be compatible with PSVR2. The PS5 Pro also boasts compatibility with other PS5 accessories like the PS Portal.
This PS Portal compatibility, coupled with previous rumors of a portable PlayStation console capable of running PS5 games, has reignited speculation about a potential new handheld device. While unconfirmed, the PS5 Pro's enhanced capabilities could pave the way for a revamped handheld line.
