Exciting news for Star Wars fans: Shawn Levy, the acclaimed director behind Deadpool & Wolverine, is still at the helm of an upcoming Star Wars movie. The project's writer, Jonathan Tropper, recently shared an update with Screen Rant, expressing his enthusiasm and hinting at a sooner-than-expected release. "I am [excited] too," Tropper stated. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
Details about the film remain largely under wraps, but we do know it will take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has clarified its timeline, noting, "That's also in the future. It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This makes Levy's film the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.
Kennedy also confirmed that Levy's movie will follow the release of 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu, saying, "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that." Adding to the anticipation, Ryan Gosling is reportedly set to star in the film.
While Tropper's words suggest progress, fans may need to wait until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027, to see the film. Since the release of the critically panned Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has not released a new Star Wars film and has canceled several projects, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie planned for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in the Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker. The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a key focus for Disney, with reports indicating her appearance in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.
Disney's Star Wars plans extend even further, with X-Men producer Simon Kinberg set to write a new trilogy that is not a continuation of the Skywalker Saga. The next Star Wars content fans can look forward to is Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple premiere episode.
