SwitchArcade Round-Up: Reviews Featuring ‘Ace Attorney Investigations Collection’, Plus New Releases and Sales

by Aaron Feb 01,2025

Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for September 4th, 2024! Summer's warmth has faded, leaving behind memories both scorching and sweet. I'm feeling a bit wiser, and I'm thankful for sharing that journey with you all. As autumn arrives, I want to express my gratitude for your fantastic company this summer. Today's article is packed with reviews, new releases, and sales – let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Nintendo Switch has given us second chances at many classic titles, and now the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection brings us Miles Edgeworth's previously unlocalized adventures. This collection cleverly builds upon previous storylines, with the sequel enhancing the original. Playing as Edgeworth offers a fresh perspective from the prosecution's viewpoint. While the core mechanics remain similar – searching for clues, questioning witnesses – the unique presentation and Edgeworth's character add a captivating flair. The pacing can feel less structured than other Ace Attorney games, but fans of the series will appreciate this sub-series. If the first game feels a bit slow, persevere – the second is significantly better.

Bonus features include an art and music gallery, a story mode, and the option to switch between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A handy dialogue history feature is also included. The two games offer a compelling contrast, making this a fantastic package overall. With this release, nearly every Ace Attorney game is now available on Switch. If you've enjoyed previous titles, this is a must-have.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to Gimmick! is a surprising but welcome addition. Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel delivers six challenging levels of physics-based platforming. While the difficulty can be steep, an easier mode is available. The gameplay remains true to the original, with Yumetaro's star serving as a versatile tool. New collectibles offer customization options, rewarding players for completing tougher sections.

The game's length is manageable, but the challenge remains high. Frequent deaths are inevitable, but generous checkpoints mitigate frustration. The charming visuals and music help maintain engagement. Gimmick! 2 successfully builds upon its predecessor without losing its unique identity. Fans of the original and challenging platformers will find this highly rewarding. However, casual players should be aware of the demanding gameplay.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platformer style to a shoot 'em up experience reminiscent of Lords of Thunder. Surprisingly, it works well, although the Switch's hardware limitations might impact performance. Despite this, the intense action, soundtrack, and visuals remain engaging. The weapon system adds depth, requiring players to manage energy and utilize melee attacks to recharge their primary weapon. Mastering this rhythm is key to success.

While different from its predecessor, Mecha Therion maintains a similar atmosphere. It's a stylish, heavy metal-infused shoot 'em up that avoids common genre pitfalls. While other platforms may offer better performance, the Switch version delivers a satisfying experience.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

This licensed game caters heavily to fans of the Umamusume franchise. The writing and meta-systems will resonate strongly with existing fans. However, for those unfamiliar with the property, the limited number of repetitive mini-games may prove underwhelming. The presentation is solid, but the lack of substantial content for non-fans is a significant drawback.

Even for fans, the game's focus might feel misplaced. While the visuals, sound, and world are well-executed, the limited gameplay might lead to quick burnout. The unlockable content might keep dedicated fans engaged, but overall, the game lacks staying power.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

This collection showcases Sunsoft's lesser-known 8-bit titles, offering a glimpse into a different side of the publisher's history. It includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three games feature save states, rewind, display options, and an art gallery. The full localization is a noteworthy achievement.

The games themselves offer a varied experience. 53 Stations can be frustrating, but charming. Ripple Island is a solid adventure game, and The Wing of Madoola is ambitious, albeit inconsistent. While not groundbreaking, they offer a unique perspective on Sunsoft's catalog. Fans of retro gaming and Sunsoft will appreciate this collection.
