Aurora Watch (UK)

Weather
4.0
Description

Experience the mesmerizing beauty of the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, right from the UK. This stunning natural spectacle, once witnessed, leaves an indelible impression. With AuroraWatch UK, you can stay informed about geomagnetic activity levels, receiving timely alerts when there's a possibility of seeing the aurora in the UK skies.

Stay ahead with alerts on geomagnetic activity increases, which are triggered when the AuroraWatch status level changes. This change in status signifies the potential for aurora visibility. You can also check the current alert status and review the recent history of the last 24 hours. Plus, benefit from the 30-minute forecast model provided by the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).

Important Notes:

  • Aurora Watch is not a forecasting app but rather a monitoring tool for geomagnetic activity.
  • Phone settings like Battery Saver can restrict push notifications, potentially narrowing or closing the alert window for aurora sightings.
  • If you're not receiving alerts, ensure that notifications for Aurora Watch UK are enabled in your phone's Settings/Notifications/App settings.
  • The app does not send alerts retroactively. If your phone is off or unable to connect to the internet at the time of a status increase, and the level decreases before the next data update, you will not receive an alert.
  • There is a necessary delay in sending alerts, allowing the data to stabilize, as recommended by Lancaster University.
  • Lancaster University primarily uses data from their Lancaster magnetometer for alerts, though they also utilize other magnetometers, including one in Shetland. Alerts might seem more 'pessimistic' due to the reliance on the Lancaster data, which is more suitable for those in England but less so for those further north.

The Aurora Watch UK app for Android is developed and maintained by Smallbouldering Projects and is not an official app. Alerts are provided by Lancaster University, UK, using data from the SAMNET and/or AuroraWatchNet magnetometer networks.
