EDR "Blackbox" Scan Tool & PDF Accident Reports for Collision Investigators

WHEN INVESTIGATING A VEHICLE COLLISION

Leverage the power of the CrashScan App paired with the OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter to delve into a vehicle's computer modules, including the crucial Event Data Recorder (EDR), commonly known as the "blackbox," where supported. The CrashScan tool is an essential asset for collision investigators, enabling them to flag, capture, and interpret vital stored data from prior accidents. This data can be instrumental in validating motor vehicle insurance claims and serving as a lead indicator for liability or questionable collision claims.

VEHICLE SUPPORT

(Event Data Recorder & Full System Diagnostic Scan)

CrashScan supports over 3000 unique year/make/models internationally. Verify your vehicle's compatibility here:

CONTEXTUAL ACCIDENT REPORTS

Upon a successful "CrashScan," the generated report will furnish detailed insights into the accident, including impact severity, impact orientation (front/rear/side impact), and additional contextual information such as:

  • The classification of the accident as minor, moderate, or severe
  • EDR trigger thresholds
  • 5.0 seconds of pre-crash data encompassing speed, brake pedal, accelerator pedal use, and steering
  • The number of occupants in the vehicle and their seatbelt status
  • An estimated damage repair amount (economic cost in $)
  • Indications of likely structural crush damage
  • Injury risk thresholds (whiplash, injury duration)
  • Comparative g-forces from daily activities for context

Injury risk algorithms are based on stored acceleration values, scientific articles, and databases like the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS).

PRIVACY LEGISLATION STATUS (EDR DATA)

Canada: There is no specific legislation governing EDR data; it is considered diagnostic and "non-private." However, insurers often obtain consent as a best practice.

United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015, enacted in December 2015, imposes limitations on EDR data retrieval and asserts that the collected information belongs to the vehicle's owner or lessee. Additionally, seventeen states have enacted statutes concerning event data recorders and privacy: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington. These statutes typically stipulate that data retrieval requires the consent of the vehicle owner or policyholder, with some exceptions.
