Aptoide, the independent app store, is now freely available on iOS for EU users. While it claims to be the first free alternative app store on iOS, the Epic Games Store actually launched first. However, Aptoide might be the first general, third-party storefront.
If you've sought iOS App Store alternatives, your options have been limited due to Apple's strict control. Thankfully, following legal battles and the Epic Games Store's iOS arrival, Aptoide has emerged. We previously covered Aptoide's beta in mid-2024, but now all EU iOS users can download it for free.
While Aptoide boldly claims to be the first alternative storefront, the Epic Games Store predates it (in full release). However, Aptoide distinguishes itself with a wider range of apps beyond gaming. A unique feature allows users to select specific app versions, previously exclusive to Android users.
While the above might sound skeptical, Aptoide has a strong claim to being first, especially considering its beta period. The Epic Games Store, while not owned by Apple or Google, is still operated by a major industry player. Therefore, Aptoide offers a truly independent alternative.
For those following the Epic v Apple saga and the subsequent opening of iOS to more app stores, this is positive news. It will be interesting to see if Aptoide can attract users dissatisfied with Apple's App Store.
