In the latest wave of "here comes a new remake" news—or, for the more optimistic among us, "here comes another Stephen King movie" news—a fresh adaptation of Stephen King's "Cujo" is gearing up to sink its teeth into audiences once again. Netflix is set to bring this chilling tale to life, with Vertigo Entertainment founder and producer Roy Lee at the helm. However, the project is still in its infancy, with no writers, directors, or cast members attached yet.
Originally published in 1981, King's novel "Cujo" was swiftly adapted into a 1983 cult classic horror film directed by Lewis Teague, penned by Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner. The gripping story follows a determined mother, portrayed by Dee Wallace, who will go to any lengths to protect her young son from a rabid dog. Trapped in a car with a dead engine, the duo must battle for their lives as Cujo, once a gentle pet now turned deadly after being bitten by a rabid bat, relentlessly stalks them. The threat of heatstroke adds another layer of tension to their desperate situation.

"Cujo" is just one of many Stephen King stories that have successfully transitioned to the big screen over the years. There has been a notable resurgence in King adaptations recently. For instance, Oz Perkins’ adaptation of King’s short story "The Monkey" was released in February, and fans can look forward to the Glen Powell-led take on "The Running Man" and JT Mollner’s interpretation of "The Long Walk" (also produced by Lee and Vertigo) later this year. Additionally, the "IT" prequel series "Welcome to Derry" is slated for HBO. Meanwhile, the iconic "Carrie" is set to be reimagined as an eight-episode series on Prime Video, helmed by horror maestro Mike Flanagan.
Stephen King enthusiasts have been treated to a feast of content recently, and with the new "Cujo" adaptation on the horizon, there’s even more delectable fare on its way.
