New First-Party PlayStation Game Will Reportedly Be Inspired by Smash Bros

A PlayStation studio, newly formed from former Bungie employees, is reportedly developing a MOBA titled "Gummy Bears." Initially conceived at Bungie, this project, rumored to be in development since at least 2020, has undergone a significant shift.

This unique MOBA is said to deviate from traditional health bar systems. Instead, it will employ a percentage-based damage mechanic, drawing inspiration from the Super Smash Bros. franchise. High damage percentages will result in characters being knocked off the map, mirroring the iconic Smash Bros. gameplay.

The game is expected to feature the standard MOBA character classes: Attack, Defense, and Support, along with multiple game modes. Its visual style is described as inviting, colorful, and low-fi—a departure from Bungie's previous, more mature titles. This stylistic choice aims to attract a younger audience.

The transition of Gummy Bears to a new PlayStation studio follows Bungie's recent layoffs and integration of staff into Sony Interactive Entertainment. While the release date remains uncertain, the game's development suggests a significant investment in a fresh, family-friendly gaming experience for the PlayStation ecosystem. The approximate 40-person team is currently working on the project in Los Angeles.
