Assassin's Creed Shadows: Deep Dive into Progression and Customization

Assassin's Creed Shadows Transmogging

Assassin's Creed Shadows (AC Shadows) offers players extensive character progression and customization, highlighted by its innovative transmogging system. This allows players to maintain desired weapon stats while altering their cosmetic appearance. A recent March 1, 2025, website post detailed this and other progression mechanics. Associate Game Director Julien shed light on the team's vision, emphasizing player agency and customization depth.

Weapon Transmogrification and Customization

The game's transmog feature lets players decouple weapon stats from aesthetics. Players can retain powerful stats while visually customizing their weapons. This feature unlocks upon constructing a Forge in the Hideout, accessible thereafter from the inventory.

Julien explained the Forge's broader role in inventory management, including weapon and gear upgrades and dismantling (with further details promised in a future Hideout-focused article). Furthermore, players can mix and match weapon components—blade, guard, and handle—for truly unique looks.

Reimagined Progression System

Building on Creative Director Charles Benoit's IGN Fan Fest 2025 combat and progression overview, Ubisoft provided a more in-depth look at the game's mechanics. The dual-protagonist design (Naoe and Yasuke) necessitated a reimagining of the progression system. The goal, according to Julien, was to align with the game's philosophy of mastery and martial arts.

Mastery, Abilities, and Knowledge Ranks

Assassin's Creed Shadows Mastery Tree

Separate mastery trees for Naoe (shinobi/assassin) and Yasuke (samurai) cater to their distinct archetypes. Investing in these trees unlocks weapon- or archetype-specific bonuses, deepening player mastery. Abilities within the trees add gameplay variety and enhanced combat effectiveness. However, access to certain abilities and mastery points is gated by the player's Knowledge Rank, increased through non-combat activities like exploring temples, praying at shrines, and practicing meditation or Kata.

Customizable Playstyles

Assassin's Creed Shadows Perks

AC Shadows offers extensive playstyle customization. Perks allow players to modify equipment, enhancing stats, inflicting afflictions, and altering gameplay conditions. Despite their initial archetypes, Naoe and Yasuke offer significant flexibility. Example builds illustrate this: Naoe can be built for aggressive, high-damage ground combat, while Yasuke can be tailored for stealth and ranged attacks.

The recent previews have generated considerable anticipation for AC Shadows' release.

Assassin's Creed Shadows launches March 20, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay informed with our upcoming articles!
