Civilization 7 Dev Recommends Even Experts Stick With the Tutorial for Their First Full Campaign — Here’s Why

Firaxis Games' creative director, Ed Beach, urges even veteran Civilization players to utilize the tutorial for their first full Civilization VII campaign. In a Steam post, he highlights the game's significant departures from previous iterations, particularly the new Ages system. This system introduces Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern ages, each concluding with a simultaneous Age Transition for all players. Transitions involve choosing a new civilization, selecting retained Legacies, and witnessing world evolution—a completely novel feature in the series.

Beach explains the default map size (Small) is intentional. While seasoned players prefer larger maps, the smaller scale facilitates learning Civilization VII's mechanics, especially the new Diplomacy system. Managing relationships with a limited number of opponents simplifies mastering Diplomatic Influence. He also recommends the Continents Plus map type for its manageable ocean exploration, crucial to the Exploration Age.

The tutorial is automatically enabled for first-time players, and Beach strongly advises experienced players to keep it active for their initial full campaign. The tutorial offers timely tips and explanations, crucial given the many system upgrades and revisions. Four Advisors provide guided quests, and Beach suggests focusing on one at a time to avoid information overload. Even after mastering core systems, he recommends switching to the "Only Warnings" setting, allowing Advisors to alert players to potential setbacks—a practice even the Firaxis team employs.

Firaxis recently revealed Civilization VII's post-launch roadmap during a livestream (note: Great Britain is DLC). The game launches on PC (Steam), Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on February 11th, with Deluxe Edition access beginning February 6th.
