Exciting news for fans of classic cartoons: Warner Bros.' shelved project, Coyote vs. Acme, might just make it to the big screen after all, according to Deadline. The Los Angeles-based independent film production and distribution company, Ketchup Entertainment, is reportedly in deep negotiations to acquire the film. Previously thought to be entirely scrapped, Coyote vs. Acme could see a theatrical release in 2026 if the deal goes through.
Announced in 2022, Coyote vs. Acme is inspired by a 1990 Ian Frazier article from The New Yorker. Co-written by James Gunn, the movie stars Will Forte and John Cena. Originally slated for a mid-2023 release on Max, the film was unexpectedly shelved despite being fully completed. A concerted campaign to save it has been actively rallying support ever since.
Ketchup Entertainment has a history of rescuing films from oblivion. They recently saved Warner Bros.’ The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie from a similar fate, securing it a theatrical run in the US. This film marks the first fully animated Looney Tunes movie to hit theaters, with IGN's review praising it as a “laugh-out-loud riot.”
Ketchup Entertainment’s portfolio also includes releases like Hellboy: The Crooked Man and the Robert Rodriguez thriller Hypnotic, starring Ben Affleck. They also co-produced Michael Mann’s 2023 Ferrari biopic.
