Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Dev Stamps Out Live Service Game Talk Amid Backlash to 'FOMO' Community Events

by Sarah Mar 01,2025

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 developers address "FOMO" concerns regarding community events. Following player backlash over limited-time cosmetic unlock events, Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive clarified their intentions, assuring players they are not aiming for a full live-service model.

The controversy stemmed from community events designed to unlock cosmetic items, leading to accusations of exploiting the "fear of missing out" (FOMO) tactic often associated with live-service games and their monetization strategies. While the game doesn't feature loot boxes, the limited-time nature of the events sparked negative reactions. This echoes concerns raised in 2021 research highlighting the psychological manipulation often employed to encourage loot box purchases.

In response to the criticism, the developers stated that all event items will eventually be made available to all players. Their official statement emphasized their commitment to avoiding a full live-service model and apologized for the negative experience, promising a streamlined unlocking process for future events.

To alleviate immediate concerns, Focus Entertainment is offering a free Mk VIII Errant Helmet (previously only obtainable through a challenging community event) to players who link their PROS accounts. This helmet was part of the Imperial Vigil event concluding March 3rd.

The upcoming 7.0 update is anticipated to add new content including a weapon, map, and PvE Prestige Ranks, addressing previous concerns about content scarcity. This follows a previous statement outlining the planned content roadmap for the coming months.

Space Marine 2's success is undeniable, having achieved record-breaking sales figures, selling over 5 million copies and becoming the fastest-selling Warhammer video game to date.
