Insomniac Games Eyes More Game-to-Screen Adaptations Following CEO's Retirement
Insomniac Games, renowned for the Ratchet & Clank franchise, has expressed keen interest in expanding its game-to-screen adaptations. This revelation emerged from an interview with co-Studio Head Ryan Schneider in Variety, following the announcement of founder and CEO Ted Price's retirement.
"Reflecting on the Ratchet & Clank movie from years ago, we had an early start, fueling our continued interest in this area. We're particularly fond of Ratchet & Clank," Schneider stated.
The 2016 Ratchet & Clank film received mixed critical reception. However, with Sony's acquisition of Insomniac in 2019, and Sony's proven success in game adaptations (notably The Last of Us), Insomniac is optimistic about future projects.
Sony's Successful Track Record in Game Adaptations
Insomniac's enthusiasm aligns with Sony's demonstrated success in translating video games into film and television. Recent successes include the 2022 Uncharted film and the critically acclaimed 2023 The Last of Us series.
Further bolstering this momentum, Sony's CES 2025 press conference unveiled additional projects: The Last of Us Season 2 (HBO, April 2025), an Until Dawn live-action film (April 2025), Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime series (Crunchyroll, 2027), and upcoming films based on Helldivers and Horizon Zero Dawn.
Ted Price's Retirement and Leadership Transition
After three decades at the helm, Insomniac Games founder and CEO Ted Price announced his retirement. Price, instrumental in the creation of iconic franchises like Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Marvel's Spider-Man, explained his decision: "I made this decision last year. After 30 years leading Insomniac, it felt time to step aside and allow others to guide the team."
Three veteran Insomniac employees – Ryan Schneider, Chad Dezern, and Jen Huang – will assume leadership as co-Studio Heads. Price expressed confidence in this transition, stating, "To maintain our success, we need leaders deeply familiar with our methods, culture, and processes, leaders who have earned the team's trust."
