FromSoftware, the creators behind the acclaimed Elden Ring, have reassured fans that they remain committed to developing their signature single-player games, despite venturing into multiplayer territory. Recently, they unveiled their upcoming title, The Duskbloods, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 during the April 2 Nintendo Direct. This online multiplayer PvPvE game retains FromSoftware's iconic Soulslike themes and aesthetics, which surprised many as the studio also prepares another multiplayer project, Elden Ring Nightreign.

In the newly launched Nintendo insider blog, Creator’s Voice, on April 4, FromSoftware Director Hidetaka Miyazaki shared insights into their future projects. He clarified that despite the focus on multiplayer games, FromSoftware's dedication to single-player experiences remains unshaken.

Miyazaki stated, "I want to emphasize that while The Duskbloods is fundamentally an online multiplayer title, this does not signify a shift away from our commitment to single-player focused games. We are also excited about the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring and will continue to create games that honor our traditional style."

The Importance of Blood in The Duskbloods

Miyazaki elaborated on the game's thematic focus on blood, with players taking on the role of "Bloodsworn." These characters possess superhuman abilities granted by special blood, drawing comparisons to vampires but without the traditional monstrous depiction.

The narrative revolves around the competition for "The First Blood," which emerges at the end of human civilization during an event known as "The Twilight of Humanity," occurring across various eras and locations.

Describing the game's settings, Miyazaki said, "The Duskbloods features a mix of Gothic and Victorian maps, alongside scenes from the early modern period, such as the train scene showcased in the trailer."

He further explained that blood in The Duskbloods symbolizes key themes like history, power, fate, and transcending human limitations, rather than just being a visual element of injury.

Wide Variety of Characters and Online Multiplayer

The game's trailer revealed a diverse array of characters, each with distinctive designs and personalities. Miyazaki confirmed that players can choose from over a dozen characters, with options for customization. He noted, "The character designs and their unique weapons offer players a chance to find their favorites."

Gameplay begins at a "hub" where players select and customize their characters before entering online multiplayer sessions, which can support up to eight players. After each match, players return to the hub to claim rewards, primarily character customization items.

Matches typically end with a last player standing, though some scenarios may have different victory conditions, such as defeating a formidable boss or facing unique challenges.

Miyazaki detailed, "Whether in PvP or PvE, our goal is to provide an experience where players can improve their skills. PvE boss encounters are designed to be challenging and rewarding."

He also introduced the concept of "roles," which assign special duties and objectives to players. Examples include the "Destined Rivals" role, where players seek out and defeat their rivals, and the "Destined Companion" role, where forming a bond with another player yields special rewards.

Miyazaki elaborated, "Roles can be customized through blood, enhancing the role-playing aspect and adding depth to player interactions."
